ALC, AC4-Columbia University and citizen platform Gure Esku Dago organized the event, hosted by Boise mayor David Bieter.

Last July 30 Agirre Lehendakaria Center, Columbia University and Gure Esku Dago organized a seminar on the Right to Choose at the Basque culture festival Jaialdia 2015, that took place in Boise, Idaho. During the event Juan Jose Ibarretxe’s new book “ The Basque Experience: constructing Sustainable Human Development” was also presented.

This event was hosted by the Boise Mayor DAVID H. BIETER. Representatives of Pete Zenarruza Foundation and Xabier Irujo (Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada) also took part in the conference.

During the first part of the meeting Juan Jose Ibarretxe presented his research on the extraordinary transformation of the Basque Country from the recovery of self-government in the eighties up to now, and specifically in the period 1998/2008, in three relevant but traditionally unrelated fields: economics, social balance and peacemaking.

The second part was dedicated to the discussion of the Right to Choose. Director of Columbia University’s AC4-The Earth Institute JOSH FISHER offered a conference on Basque public opinion around the issue; he also addressed the research they are currently developing, focused on the citizen-dynamic that Gure Esku Dago carries on. The event ended with a conference by JON CAMIO, member of the Basque diaspora and GED, with the title “Future, Decision, Together”.

Agirre Lehendakaria Center also took the opportunity to build ties with the Basque diaspora in the US during the visit.
