Okinawa and the Basque Country together in Boise!
Last August Agirre Lehendakaria Center participated in the Basque culture festival Jaialdia that took place in Boise, Idaho. We co-organized a seminar on the Right to Choose and presented Juan Jose Ibarretxe’s new book “ The Basque Experience”. We wanted to make the most of this visit, so we took the chance to build ties with other cultures and countries.
On one hand, naturally, we worked on the links with the Basque community in the US. On the other hand, and more surprisingly, we met our collaborators from Okinawa, Japan, who showed their interest in the Basque cultural development in the last few decades, specially concerning the recovery of the Basque language Euskera, and also in creating new ininiatives like Jaialdia, aimed to their own diapora.
We have been collaborating with a group of researchers from the University of the Ryukyus for some time now, in order to foster and encourage the dialects of the Okinawan islands (Uchinaguchi, Kunigami, Miyako…), within the framework of Agirre Center’s projects around the recovery of minoritized languages.
